Culture helps me embrace who I am.

Shakaya AldridgeParticipant

From March to July 2024, a third group from Yuin country took part in a series of journeys during school holidays, visiting places including Nelligen, Canberra, Tamworth, Murramarang, and Sydney.

Along the way, they met with elders and knowledge holders such as Roger and Bareki Knox, Jordan and Kizzy Nye, and Paul Carriage, who shared teachings about Culture, Country, and community. These experiences aimed to strengthen cultural identity and build confidence and resilience through connection to place and shared knowledge.

Yarning and reflection circles were held regularly to support participants in processing their experiences and exploring their own cultural journeys. Between trips, the group continued to meet in Batemans Bay during school terms to maintain connection, reflect on challenges, and deepen bonds with mentors and each other.

I can teach younger people one day, tell them about the dreaming. Tell them stories, teach them dances. It helps me feel connected to the culture.
