A journey from Walbunja-Yuin Country to Canberra, Central Coast NSW and Goondiwindi QLD.
From June to September 2023, a group from Walbunja-Yuin Country went on several journeys during school holidays through coastal and inland NSW to the border of Queensland at Goondiwindi.
During these trips, the participants met local elders and knowledge holders such as Paul Carriage, Joe Brierley, and Jordan Nye, who taught them dance, lore, and life lessons about traditional ways and how to treat each other & nature respectfully. They also met MP Fiona Philips at Parliament House, Elder Gavi Duncan in the Central Coast, and Uncle Roger Knox in Goondiwindi.
These experiences were designed to build confidence and resilience by connecting to Country and Culture. During these journeys yarning and reflection circles were regularly conducted encouraging participants to reflect on the experiences they had and explore their own Cultural identity. During the school terms participants also met regularly in Batemans Bay to maintain contact, discuss any challenges they were facing, and continue to build relationships with mentors and participants.
